Washington Antique Keys

Prior to the war of 1812, many homes and businesses in Washington were left unlocked at all times. Locks and keys were a symbol of distrust. Once the war began and new people were constantly travelling through the area, the need for locks and keys became apparent.
The multiple purposes of these keys did not escape the notice of Washington settlers. They found new uses for locks and keys once the war was over.

Victorian keys are the most common antique keys associated with Washington. During social events, hosts and hostesses found it necessary to lock certain rooms of the house, including the master bedroom, to prevent guests from going into them. Victorian keys and locks were used to do this.

These keys were a status symbol, as well as a security measure. Upper class families had keys with a very ornate bow. The design on the bow usually imitated the ironwork or other accents on the outside of the home. Lower class families had very simple bow sections. The poorest families sometimes had keys without a bow section. If there was a bow section, it was often only a circle.

The main characteristics of Victorian keys are universal for every class. A simple bit and long shaft are the main ways to identify these keys.
It is not uncommon to find rust, grooves and worn edges on antique keys. Carefully cleaning the key can remove the rust. Re-minting the key can remove grooves and restore the key to full function.
