Tampa Antique Keys

Cantonment Brooke was established in 1823 out of a government effort to tame the wild swamplands that are now Tampa, Florida. In 1824, the area was renamed Fort Brooke.

The constant threat of attacks by the Seminole Native American tribe, coupled with the difficult conditions of the area, led to a slow growth for Tampa. These factors also led to use of small lock boxes. The soldiers though it was wise to protect these items. Food and other supplies were also placed in the boxes, as they were difficult to replace.

The military life kept the men constantly on the move. Thus securing items in large pieces of furniture outfitted with locks was not feasible. Instead, the men carried around small lock boxes to protect only the most valuable items: foodstuffs, pictures, and letters from a loved one.

These lock boxes and the keys that go with them are rare collectables today. The keys are often in poor condition and must be completely restored. Only the most experienced locksmiths should be asked to complete this task, as the humid weather in Tampa wreaks havoc on the keys, weakening the metal.

In order to preserve these valuable antiques and the skills needed to restore them, many locksmiths are working to train a new generation of locksmiths. These new artisans will be capable of taking over when the elder ones retire. Most locksmith trade schools provide instruction on caring for these keys. However, locksmiths that learn from instruction at the trade schools are still considered inferior until they learn the craft from the true experts.
