Santa Ana Antique Keys

William Spurgeon founded Santa Ana in 1869 as a refuge for gold seeking pioneers. Many people thought it odd that Spurgeon felt the need to secure the general store, which he built in an effort to make extra money. However, by the time Santa Ana was incorporated in 1886, locks were a common sight throughout the city.

Because of the wide range of social classes that settled in the area, there were a wide variety of locks used. Lower class families used locks that could be opened with master keys. Upper class families used locks that worked with Victorian keys.

Besides the difference in the bit design of each key, they could also be distinguished by looking at the bow. Victorian keys had very elaborate bow sections, which is why only the upper class could afford them. Master keys had a very simple, round or oval bow. The simplicity of the design took little time to fashion, which made the keys affordable for lower class families.

Today, both types of antique keys take the same skill level to care for. Locksmiths that work on antique keys generally have over 20 years of experience and many have attended specialized classes to learn how to handle the weakened metal.

Santa Ana antique keys are relatively inexpensive when compared to keys from other cities in California. This is because there is an abundance of antique keys deemed authentic to the city. Many experts credit this to the fact that settlers and their descendants often consider these keys to be heirlooms.
