San Jose Antique Keys

San Jose, California was founded on November 29, 1777 as a farming community. Up until March 27, 1850, when the town was the second incorporated city in California, the settlers had little need for locks. The town was small and all the settlers knew one another. Outside visitors were rare and usually sponsored, or hosted, by a family in the community.

Shortly after the incorporation came the introduction of the railroad. This brought many unknown outsiders to the area. As a result, crime increased and the settlers found that they needed to lock their wares and goods.

Unfortunately, little is known about the types of antique keys that were used in San Jose from the railroads establishment in the city through 1906, as many homes and businesses were completely destroyed in the earthquake of 1906.

That natural disaster is the sole reason for the lack of antique keys in the San Jose area. Because of this fact, many antique collectors are willing to pay top dollar for authentic antique keys, which are deemed native to the area.

Once the collector has the antique key in hand, only the finest locksmiths will be able to have the honor of working on the key. Antique aficionados know the value of the keys and how a simple cleaning, if performed incorrectly, can spell disaster for the key.

Highly trained and very experienced locksmiths, often with over 20 year’s experience, are generally more expensive than run-of-the-mill locksmiths are. However, the fee is well worth knowing the antique key will be well preserved and cared for so future generations can learn from its rich history.
