Sacramento Antique Keys

When gold was discovered in Sutter’s Mill in 1848, an influx of settlers ventured to the area now known as Sacramento, which is located about 50 miles from Sutter’s Mill. In an attempt to secure their findings, gold rush pioneers carried lock boxes and lock sets to use on furniture and doors.

The most common antique keys found in Sacramento are miniature Victorian keys. These keys have short shafts, decorated bows and small, simple teeth.
Because of the age of the keys and locks, it is important that only experienced locksmiths and antique restorers work on Sacramento antique keys. Many an antique key is destroyed by inexperienced artisans trying perform the restoration. Only knowledgeable smiths can properly attend to these keys.

Physical blemishes are common among these keys. Rust and cracks are the most common. If these defects are present, the key needs to be restored or re-minted to function properly. Sometimes, the lock needs to be restored as well.

Antique keys that will fit these locks are sometimes purchased online. These keys usually do not have the worn look that many antique collectors want. If this is the case, it may be possible to have the key artificially weathered to match the finish on the lock. This will make the key look authentic.

As an alternative to this, collectors may be able to find antique keys at estate sales or antique auctions. This method of finding a key is preferable, especially if the lock can be taken to the sale or auction to ensure the key works in it.
