Rochester Antique Keys

Rochester, New York was known for flour during the 1800’s. However, many millers sometimes found their supply of flour dwindling faster than normal. In an attempt to keep their goods safe, millers invested in locksets.

Because of the urgent need for this security, the millers were willing to buy the best locks that could be found. Many decided that double-sided locks were suitable for the exterior doors of their mills, as well as their homes.

As time went on, people began to use locks not only on the exterior doors of buildings, but also on interior doors and pieces of furniture. The millers thought that more locks on their valuables lessened the likelihood that the valuables would be stolen.

Apparently, this was a good idea, as Rochester had the lowest crime rate per capita of any other incorporated city for the majority of the 19th century.

Many of the antique keys used in Rochester during the 1800’s are still available today. Some were fashioned by Canadian locksmiths, which add some aesthetic and monetary value to them.

In any case, it is very unwise to allow any inexperienced locksmith or antique restore professionals to work on a Rochester antique key, as the keys are often weak and can easily be damaged or destroyed. This rule of thumb remains the same for cleanings and other preservation work.
