Oakland Antique Keys

Oakland, California is a direct product of the California Gold Rush of 1848. The gold prospectors settled the area, which was officially given its name on May 4, 1852.

The prospectors worked hard for the gold they found, and thus wanted to keep it protected. Once the gold was sold, it allowed them to get much needed supplies. Thievery was a very big problem. Prospectors unlucky in their gold search would resort to stealing from their luckier counterparts. In an effort to keep their loot safe, the prospectors purchased locksets from merchants.

Most of the locksets sold during that time used the skeleton key. The elongated shaft sections, simple, circular bow and short bit characterize this type of key. Many of them are still available in the Oakland area today.

As with many antiques, it is of vital importance that only experienced locksmiths work on the locksets, even if it is only for a simple cleaning. Because of the extreme weather in Oakland, the keys are often very weak, and sometimes very brittle. One wrong move with it, and the key could be permanently damaged beyond repair.

Some locks don’t have keys. However, those keys are usually readily available at Oakland antique stores and flea markets.

Regardless of how the antique key is purchased, taking care of it should be a top priority. Only the most experienced locksmiths, usually those with more than 20 years experience, should be allowed to handle the key for regular cleanings and other work.
