Newark Antique Keys

Newark, New Jersey was originally founded in 1666, only two years after the state of New Jersey was founded. The settlers had very little need to lock their homes or goods, as crime was almost non-existent until the 1800’s.

As the settlement’s population grew, people began to feel the need to protect their belongings. Much of the furniture and doors made during the 19th century had primitive locks and keys.

Settlers found that these keys provided little, if any, protection for their goods, as one key could usually open any similar lock. The keys were called master keys. They functioned the same as the master keys found today that can open multiple locks, despite the actual lock tooth pattern.

When purchasing antique furniture in the Newark area, it is very likely the piece will have a lock and key. Sometimes, the key is not available. In this case, visiting a qualified locksmith, or one with over 20 years of experience, is the best way to get a key to the lock.

The locksmith may be willing to visit your home to inspect the lock and cut a key for it. But, some locksmiths do not have the portable tools to do this. They may have to remove the lock from the furniture and take it to the shop in order to create a key.
There are basic antique keys for sale online. However, the only way to insure you get the right one for the lock is to visit a locksmith or Newark antique keys dealer.
