In 1882, a group of three builders working on the Arizona Canal Project ventured to the area that is now Glendale, Arizona. As homesteaders began to settle in the area, the men discovered supplies and equipment was missing from their work space. This was the first time that the homesteaders felt the need to secure their belongings.

Many of these early settlers weren’t able to afford locks for the doors of their homes, as these were incredibly expensive. As an alternative, they decided to secure only important and expensive items.

Furniture makers and locksmiths soon teamed up to meet the needs of the homesteaders. Large boxes made of metal or wood, resembling a safe, were the most sought after items made. The versatility of these boxes allowed homesteaders to store almost any items in them.

This, coupled with the size of the bow section, made the keys easy to conceal in small spaces. Many homesteaders hid them between the pages of the Bible or under candles.

Flea markets, antique dealers and antique collectors are willing to pay top dollar for locks those original keys, even if the key is broken or badly worn.
