Fresno Antique Keys

By the time Fresno, California was formed in 1856, citizens were beginning to see the need to lock up valuable possessions, including homes. Because of the railroad station that served both the Central Pacific Railroad and Southern Pacific Railroad, travelers frequently visited Fresno on their way to other destinations.

These travelers posed a problem for the untrusting Fresno citizens. Even the poor Fresno residents believed that financial papers, money and valuable jewelry were at risk of being stolen.

When the city was incorporated in 1885, locks on doors were a common sight. In addition, the number of locks in a home was a status symbol. Only the wealthiest families had multiple locks. Middle class or lower class families usually only had one lock, if any, in the home. In some cases, this lock was on a locked box used to store money and jewelry or heirlooms.

Skeleton keys, master keys and double-sided keys were all found in Fresno homes, until the turn of the century. Some of the older homes in Fresno may still have an antique lock on an infrequently used door or on antique furniture.

However, these lock and key sets are usually worn, weathered or damaged. There are numerous Fresno antiques dealers and locksmiths that can restore, re-mint or replace weathered keys and locks.
