Denver Antique Keys
On November 22, 1858, a group of prospectors established the city now known as Denver, Colorado. The area quickly became known for ‘furry bank notes’ or beaver pelts. As trappers began to settle in the area, it quickly became evident that they needed a way to protect their pelts from thieves and animals.
As time passed, the railroad made its way into the area. The sudden upswing in population further impressed the need for security upon the settlers. It was a locksmith, hoping to sell his crafts in the region, who brought locksets to the area.
Locksmiths quickly became overwhelmed with orders for these security devices. All of the settlers, including trappers, rail men, artisans and prospectors, were willing to give up their goods or money in exchange for locksets.
Victorian keys quickly became the most popular type of locksets in the Denver area. The ornate decorations on the bow section and the ability to hide the key were the reasons this key became popular.
Because of the design of the lock, it is important that only skilled locksmiths work on Denver antique keys. While these artisans are usually more expensive than unskilled locksmiths are, they have the experience necessary to ensure the safety of the antique lock and key.
The changing climate in the area weakens these ornate keys. Rust and cracks are common among Denver antique keys. If these defects severe, the key will have to be re-minted to work in the lock. The lock may have to be restored in some cases to allow the key to function properly.
