Anchorage Antique Keys

Anchorage is considered to be one of the youngest big cities in the United States. It was not incorporated until November 23, 1920. Because of this, many of the oldest keys in Anchorage are not antique keys, per se.
The majority of antique keys found in Anchorage were not made in Anchorage. In fact, most of the keys were made in Canada. Of these keys, about 75 percent were skeleton keys.

People sometimes mistakenly interchange the terms skeleton key and master key. In fact, these two types are similar but, they do have some distinct differences. Skeleton keys have a long shaft and simple bit. However, a master key has a short shaft and blank bit.

Finding antique keys in Anchorage may be difficult. One reason for the shortage of antique keys in Anchorage is that the temperature extremes common in the area cause metal to contract and expand at abnormal rates. That destroys antique keys, as they generally do not have the additives in the metal common for keys today.

Generally, when antique furniture is missing the original key, it is easier to have a locksmith or Anchorage antique dealer craft a key for the furniture than it is to try to find an original replacement key. In some cases, a well-worn key may also need to be replaced.

An antique key that is slightly worn may be able to be refinished through a process called re-minting. This refinishes the key and returns it to as close to a new condition as possible
