Anaheim Antique Keys

Fifty German grape farming families founded Anaheim, California in 1857. These families were a close-knit group that felt very safe. However, that safety was interrupted when the railroad came into the area in 1886.

The influx of outsiders put pressure on the grape farmers to secure their belongings. While no one knows exactly where the first lockset in the area came from, many experts believe that a merchant brought it to town, as most of the locksets in the area are fashioned after Old English locksets.

While the locks had a design that was not common in the area, the keys used resembled the common skeleton keys of the 1800’s. The only difference was that the Anaheim antique keys were smaller and more detailed than the traditional skeleton keys.

When compared to other keys of the era, Anaheim antique keys are considerably more difficult to care for, as the shaft is much thinner and the bit is often weaker. Very few locksmiths of today have been trained to care for these keys.

Antique collectors that have been lucky enough to find Anaheim antique keys that are still serviceable will usually take the keys to a locksmith that has proven his worthwhile working on other keys for the collector.

Restoring Anaheim antique keys is a lengthy process that takes almost twice as long as restoring a traditional skeleton key. They are also nearly impossible to replicate. These two factors make authentic Anaheim antique keys very expensive and hard to come by.
